Mukesh Ambani to get into fast food business

Reliance Industries, a $50-billion-plus oil and gas giant, will enter the fast-food business with its own brand next year, opening yet another front to do business directly with India's growing young population after retail and 4G wireless services.

Mukesh Ambani has roped in Rishi Negi, COO of multiplex operator Fame India, which is partly owned by his younger brother Anil Ambani, to develop a quick service restaurant (QSR) concept within 3-4 months, two senior Reliance executives said.

Negi will spearhead Reliance's entry into a segment that is growing at least 25% a year and where international brands such as McDonald's and Domino's jostle to introduce Indianised cuisines to take on popular local chains such as Jumbo King and Saravana Bhavan.


Reliance is exploring a scaleable model like McDonald's and Domino's, complete with a standardised menu and express delivery, the executives said. It plans both independent outlets and presence in food courts.

"The company is looking at anything suitable for Indian palate, be it Chinese, Italian or Indian cuisine," one of them said. The Reliance Industries spokesman declined to comment. The executives said the company has zoomed in on Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore as the tentative locations to launch the business.

"With a hypermarket format already attracting a large number of consumers, it makes sense to bundle in food as well," one of the executives said. The company has already experimented with a fresh bakery at its hypermarkets, Reliance Mart.

The move is in line with Mukesh Ambani's aggressive moves to build businesses for the country's consumer class, dominated by demanding and aspirational youngsters. His retail arm, Reliance Retail, operates around 1,146 multi-brand outlets across the country through chains such as Reliance Fresh, Reliance Super and Reliance Mart.

Also, Reliance Industries is the only pan-India licence holder to offer 4G services, which can provide internet connection at more than 100 mbps.

The company, which paidRs13,000 crore for the licence, is expected to launch 4G data services within a couple of months at justRs10 per GB, or almost one-tenth of current 3G charges-an offer the Facebook generation may find hard to resist.

Negi is coming in with some experience in the restaurant business. He was the COO of Pizzeria Restaurants, which operated Pizza Hut a few years ago, and was food & beverage manager at Taj Coromandel, the Taj Group's 5-star hotel in Chennai.

China to open its first military base abroad in Indian Ocean

In a move that may cause unease in India, China today announced that it will set up its first military base abroad in the Indian Ocean island ofSeychelles to "seek supplies and recuperate" facilities for its Navy. 

The naval fleet may seek supplies or recuperate at appropriate harbours in Seychelles or other countries as needed during escort missions, Chinese Defence Ministry announced here today. 

China has already cemented its foothold in the Indian Ocean by signing contract with the UN backedInternational Seabed Authority to gain rights to explore polymetallic sulphide ore deposit in Indian Ocean over the next 15 years. 

The contract awarded this year to a Chinese association exclusive rights to explore a 10,000-square-km of international seabed in the southwest Indian Ocean. 

The base in Seychelles is regarded significant by analysts as China is about to launch its first aircraft carrier. It is currently undergoing final trials. 

Playing down its significance, Chinese Defence Ministry statement today said it is international practice for naval fleets to re-supply at the closest port of a nearby state during long-distance missions. 

Apparently commenting on a recent report that China will establish a military base in Seychelles, it said Chinese naval fleets have re-supply facilities at harbours in Djibouti, Oman and Yemen since China sent its first convoy to the Gulf of Aden in 2008. 

The decision to establish its first naval base abroad was taken during Chinese Defence Minister Gen Liang Guanglie's goodwill visit to Seychelles earlier this month. 

During the visit, Seychelles Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Paul Adam said his country has invited China to set up a military base on the archipelago to beef up the fight against piracy. 

"We have invited the Chinese government to set up a military presence on Mahe to fight the pirate attacks that the Seychelles face on a regular basis," Adam was quoted as saying in the media reports. 

"For the time being China is studying this possibility because she has economic interests in the region and Beijing is also involved in the fight against piracy," he said. 

During Liang's visit, the two sides exchanged views on their countries' and armies' cooperation, as well as on the global and regional situation, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. 

Seychelles appreciates China's efforts to maintain safe navigation on the Indian Ocean, as well as the support it has granted to Seychelles, the ministry said. 

Seychelles also invited China's navy to re-supply and recuperate in the country during escort missions, the defence ministry statement said.

MBAs, engineers join Delhi police as sub-inspectors

Are Indian youth unable to get jobs according to their qualifications or are they merely looking for stability in their career? These questions came to the fore on Saturday when 344 sub-inspectors were inducted into the Delhi police even though they were over qualified for their jobs. Sixty-eight of these SIs were women.

Fourteen engineers, including an MTech, and 15 MBAs were among the Sub-Inspectors who joined the force at a ceremony held at Jharoda Kalan in northwest Delhi. Among the new inductees are 52 people with Master of Arts degreee, 10 with MSc, seven law graduates, four MComs, three BPharm, two MEd and one BPEd.

Out of the 344 Sub Inspectors, once again only 30 per cent were from Delhi. "106 officers are from Delhi, 79 from Haryana, 76 from UP, 56 from Rajasthan, 15 from Bihar, four from Madhya Pradesh, two each from Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh and one each from West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Orissa and Punjab. Cops claimed Delhi police was one of the most culturally diverse forces in the country.


Addressing the new recruits after the passing-out parade, Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta called upon the young officers to serve the society in impartial way and also to enforce the law in letter and spirit. He emphasized the proactive role police played in protecting the weaker section of society and the immediate need for people-friendly policing.

Training for officers consists of indoor training where they were imparted knowledge of various subjects under law, human behaviour, police science, police practical work, police rules, criminology, terrorism and computer related crimes. In outdoor training modules, they were imparted training on drills, handling of weapons, vehicle driving, firing practice and special emphasis on unarmed combat and physical fitness.

A common card for all modes of transport in cities?

The Ministry of Urban Development is set to launch a 'Common Mobility Card' with which city people will be able to travel in various modes oftransport without having to queue up for tickets. 

Sources said a prototype of the Common Mobility Card would be launched by Minister of Urban Development Kamal Nath on Tuesday. 

The aim of the Common Mobility Card is that in the coming years passengers in various cities all accross country would be able to travel in buses, taxis, auto rickshaws and metros using the same card, officials said. 

Though the Urban Development ministry has developed the card, it is up to the state governments and transport bodies to tie up with each other and implement the scheme. 

Ministry officials said the card had been created so that it facilitates a standard specification for state transport bodies as they set up meters and fare collection system across different states. 

"The card has been created so that various transport agencies as they set up there fare collection equipment use the standard specification of the common Mobility Cards. In the coming years, through tie-ups between various agencies, the same card would serve as a ticket for different modes of transport across cities," a source said. 

The smartcard is also designed keeping in mind that calculation of different tariffs in different cities for different modes of public transport. 

The card can also be used for paying toll tax and parking fees. 

Through the common card, the ministry of Urban Development hopes to significantly reduce the costs of printing paper tickets and thus save on paper and printing expenses.
