Yamuna Expressway: Zip through for free till August 15

A swanky new Yamuna Expressway connecting Delhiwith Agra, the city of the Taj, will offer a free ride to commuters till Independence day, the developers of the 165-km access controlled road Jaypee Infratech said today.

The Yamuna Expressway, which will reduce time between Delhi and Agra to two and a half hours, was inaugurated this morning by UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav through a video link from his residence in Lucknow.

The toll road was announced by Mayawati in 2001 to reduce congestion on NH-2, a 200-km stretch of old highway that took 4-5 hours to traverse.

The new expressway, which took around 47 months and Rs 13,300 crores to build, runs from Greater Noida to Agra, crossing Aligarh and Mathura with several new projects such as Jaypee's Sports City in Greater Noida and the Forumla One track and new real estate projects coming up along the way.

Commuters will pay Rs 2.10 per km as toll for cars and jeeps, Rs 6.60 for buses and trucks, Rs 3.23 for minis and Rs 10.10 for heavy vehicles. A round trip in a car would cost Rs 510 (Rs 240 for a single ride). Two-wheeler users will pay Rs 240 for a round trip (Rs 150 for a single ride). Commuters using the Yamuna Expressway for at least 20 visits a month will get a 20% discount.

The government had earlier fixed the speed limit at 100 km per hour for cars and 60 km per hour for heavy vehicles.

Even though the Yamuna Expressway was ready for the last few months, the UP government had decided that it will give a green signal to the project on after all pending work on the support infrastructure around the expressway is also completed. This delayed the opening of the toll road.

The Yamuna Expressway is expected to cut down travel time between Delhi and Agra substantially and the developers are hoping it would further boost tourist traffic to the city of the Taj. The existing highway, which crosses two states, is longer at 200 kilometres and has a number of bottlenecks, which extend travel time up to five hours between Delhi and Agra.
